Area Roundup:

The Lynnville-Sully girls (11-6, 10-6) were victorious over the Belle Plaine Plainsman (11-6, 11-6) on Tuesday night by a score of 45-35 on the heels of a strong second half.

The two teams were separated by just two points at halftime but enjoyed scoring outbursts from junior Casey Cullen and sophomore Lysandra James, who were the only Hawks in double figures and finished with 12 and 13 points respectively.

“The girls did a good job of executing the game plan on the defensive end. We had good rotation on defense and set the attitude for the game.” Coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We passed the ball better and knocked down open shots.”

The boys of Lynnville-Sully blew past the Bell Plaine boys’ team Tuesday night with a final score of 66-36. The Hawks had a true team effort on offense with only one player scoring in double figures. Junior TJ Cunningham led the way with 17 points.

“I thought we did a good job of moving the ball around on offense again.” Hawks coach Nick Harthoorn said. “Our defense and rebounding really stepped up in the second quarter, which is when we made our run”

Both Lynnville-Sully teams have games at home against Montezuma on Friday.

Raider hoops swept

by North Polk

The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys basketball team kept things close, while the Raider girls were doubled up by visiting North Polk Tuesday night in Baxter.

CMB’s boys (4-13, 3-11 Heart of Iowa Conference) dropped a narrow 71-68 decision to North Polk despite a monster 27-point, nine-rebound night by sophomore Bryce Kemp on an efficient 12-of-17 shooting. The Raiders had a chance to tie things up late thanks to a 3-pointer from sophomore Seth Balke, but simply ran out of time for a comeback.

Junior Austin Moorman joined Kemp in double figures with 16 points, while Balke added 14, sophomore Tommy Galloway had eight, junior Zach Samson had three and senior Zach Hartgers added two.

The Raiders won the rebound battle 19-18, but the Comets were boosted by three players in double figures, including Russell Greene’s 25.

CMB’s girls (6-13, 4-11) had a little bit tougher of a time against the Comets, who lead the conference on the girls side, losing 77-32. Three North Polk players finished in double figures for points.

Both Raider teams will return to action at home Friday night when they host PCM.
