Newton to host Coaches vs. Cancer Night

Newton Senior High School is gearing up to fight cancer with a winning team, the American Cancer Society. Join the Cardinals this Friday to cheer on the team, as they take on Norwalk and cancer, through Coaches vs. Cancer.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches that empowers coaches, their teams, and local communities to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Last year more than 2,000 colleges and high schools participated in the program, and any sport team can participate.

“I am really proud of the Cardinal community for committing to fight this disease,” said Newton girls coach Brandon Sharp. “It’s a cause we all connect with, and a fight we can win. Students and team members have gone the extra mile to raise funds and awareness, and we’ll be showing off our success during the game this Friday.”

Lori Samson, coordinator of the event, says one of the highlights of the evening will be the introduction of two cancer survivors. Their stories will be shared, followed by all cancer survivors standing to be recognized. There will also be a special performance by the NHS Pacesetters along with their guests, the Unified Dance Team. The Pep band will also be performing.

Lori would like to thank the people that have volunteered with this event.  It takes many to put this together.

“This is our fourth year doing this fundraiser.  Last year we raised over $3,200 and are off to a great start again this year,” Samson said. “We will be having a silent auction with many great items including a Mall of America package, designer sunglasses, gift certificates for a furniture store, autographed items by Tyler Sash of the New York Giants and Kyle Korver of the Atlanta Hawks, as well a couple of basketballs signed by the NHS boys basketball team, and so much more for both male and female of all ages, and even your pets. We all know someone, whether a family member or friend, that has dealt with cancer and understand the need to support this cause.”

In addition to the silent auction there will also be a bake sale, games during halftimes for prizes, and sales of balloons for those that have had cancer. A t-shirt sale was recently held.

Funds raised through Coaches vs. Cancer help the American Cancer Society save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back against cancer. The initiative combines the personal experiences, community leadership, and professional excellence of athletic coaches nationwide to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness, fundraising, and advocacy programs.

The event will begin at 6:15 p.m. at Newton Senior High School. For more information, contact Lori Samson at 791-1283.  We hope to see you at the games.  Come out and support the Newton Cardinals.
