Area roundup: PCM basketball sweeps Greene County
senior Nate Vande Wall had seven, senior Michael Neff had four and senior Hunter Van Veen rounded out the team with two.
The Mustang girls had a slightly less stressful night, defeating the Rams 50-28. Riding a two-game conference win streak, the PCM girls are now 7-6 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
Lynnville-Sully wrestling takes second at Wayne invite
The long trip to Corydon was well worth it for the Lynnville-Sully wrestling team on Saturday, as the Hawks finished second in a duals tournament at Wayne High School.
The Hawks defeated Van Buren, Southeast Warren and Bedford/Lenox to finish first in their pool before falling to Eddyville-Blakesburg in the championship matchup. Cole Nickell (106 pounds), Noah Zylstra (170) and Shane Thompson (285) all went undefeated for Lynnville-Sully in the tournament.
“The kids wrestled hard and we won some matches we weren’t supposed to,” Hawks coach Steve Northcutt said. “We did lose some that way also, but overall as a team we did what we wanted to do. It’s the first time in a long time we brought home some hardware.”
Hawk basketball sweeps Keota
The Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team returned to a winning streak, while the girls recovered from a tough loss with victories over Keota Friday night in Keota.
The Hawk boys (10-2, 10-1 South Iowa Cedar League) had to rally from a 22-20 halftime deficit, but closed the game with an 18-3 fourth quarter to earn a 46-32 victory. Freshman Connor Cullen led the way with 13 points for the Hawks, while junior Darin Hofer had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior TJ Cunningham finished with nine points, senior Cale Van Wyk had five and seniors Nathan Russell and Brady Van Wyk each finished with four.
“The guys demonstrated a lot of toughness tonight and it paid off in the fourth quarter,” Hawks coach Nick Harthoorn said.
Meanwhile, the Lynnville-Sully girls used a big first half to take a 47-38 victory. The Hawks (9-5, 8-5) led 30-14 at halftime and were led by sophomore Lysandra James’ 20 points.
“I thought the girls played very well tonight on both ends,” Hawks coach Jerry Hulsing said. “I was very happy with our defense as we rotated well and then rebounded pretty well also.”
Lynnville-Sully filled up the score sheet, as junior Cassie Cullen finished with eight points, junior Rachel Van Wyk had six, sophomore Shelby Davis and freshman Kasia Ehresman had four, junior Jade Van Rees had three and junior Becca Vos had two.
CMB basketball
swept by Gilbert
The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter basketball teams couldn’t capitalize on conference wins earlier last week, as both fell to Gilbert on the road Friday night.
CMB’s boys (4-9, 3-8 Heart of Iowa Conference) had a big night offensively, but couldn’t contain Gilbert on the other end for an 83-69 loss. Junior Austin Moorman and sophomore Bryce Kemp each finished with 13 points, while sophomore Seth Balke had 12 and junior Zach Samson had 11. Ten Raiders overall scored in the loss.
The Raider girls fell to Gilbert, 48-40, to end their two-game win streak. They are now 5-10 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
Tigerhawk hoops
swept by Nevada
The Colfax-Mingo basketball teams each took tough losses Friday night, as the Tigerhawk boys fell 58-38 and the girls lost 69-22 to Nevada.
For the C-M boys (2-9, 1-9), Trent Pease led the way with 10 points, while Vaughn Wilson had eight and Austin Yoakum had six.
Colfax-Mingo’s girls dropped to 1-12 overall and 1-11 in the conference with the loss.
Both C-M teams will travel to Greene County on Tuesday.
