PCM hoops sweeps Colfax-Mingo; boys remain undefeated

The Prairie City-Monroe boys basketball team brought its record to 7-0 and the Mustangs girls got back to .500 with a sweep of county foe Colfax-Mingo Tuesday night.

The Mustang boys (7-0, 5-0 Heart of Iowa Conference) got their second-straight 20-point game from junior Dillon Bruxvoort, but the Tigerhawks responded with 20 from senior Austin Yoakum and 19 from senior Vaughn Wilson in a narrow 59-55 win for PCM. The Mustangs held a 36-17 lead at halftime, but the Tigerhawks fell just short with a 38-23 second half.

PCM also got double-digit scorers in seniors Ethan Kain (12), Alex DeWitte (11) and Michael Neff (10), while freshman Logan Gilman rounded out the team scoring with six. The Mustangs also won the rebound battle 29-24.

For the Tigerhawks (1-5, 0-5), Yoakum did his damage with five 3-pointers, while Wilson grinded out his 19 with seven field goals. Fellow senior Byron Johnson joined them in double figures with 10, while senior Connor Hainer finished with six.

The girls game was a bit more lopsided as the Mustangs (4-4, 3-3) jumped out to a 22-6 lead after the first quarter. The Tigerhawks answered with a 19-point second quarter, but PCM stretched its halftime lead out further with a 21-point third.

Senior Kelsey Townsend and sophomore Courtney Van Houweling had big nights for PCM, scoring 26 points each. Both of them also hit six 3-pointers and pulled down six rebounds. Junior Abbi Gilson finished with six points, while sophomore Grace Telfer had four, senior Krisha Houseman had three and senior Kaylee Woody and junior Lexi Kain each finished with two.

Both Tigerhawk teams will host Roland-Story on Friday, while PCM will host county rival CMB.

L-S basketball sweeps Montezuma to extend winning streaks

The Lynnville-Sully boys basketball team won its third game in a row, while the Hawk girls officially began a streak with their second in a row Tuesday night, sweeping Montezuma on the road.

The Hawk girls (5-2, 4-1 South Iowa Cedar League) dominated the first quarter with a 19-8 lead, then outscored the Braves 30-13 in the second half to cruise to a 55-29 victory. L-S lost the turnover battle 20-18, but dominated rebounds, 39-23.

“We played much better in the second half. We started to move the ball on offense quicker and were able to get the ball inside, allowing us to take advantage of our size,” Hawks coach Jerry Hulsing said. “We also rebounded the ball well again tonight.”

Three Hawks were in double figures for scoring, including juniors Jade Van Rees with 14, Rachel Van Wyk with 12 and Cassie Cullen with 10. Van Rees and sophomore Madison Rasmusson tied for a game-high with eight rebounds, while Cullen and sophomore Shelby Davis each pulled down seven.

Rasmusson also contributed nine points, while Davis had six and sophomores Lysandra James and Tierney Needham rounded out the team’s scoring with two each.

Things were a bit closer in the boys game in the early going, although the Hawks still led the entire game. After taking a 23-16 lead into halftime, L-S scored 15 in the third to distance themselves before icing the game in the fourth for a 47-26 win.

“The guys played great defense tonight,” Hawks coach Nick Harthoorn said. “We also did a better job of rebounding the basketball. I was pleased with the way the boys controlled the ball in the fourth quarter.”

Junior TJ Cunningham led the Hawks with 15 points on a 5-for-9 night from the field with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. It was a balanced scoring effort behind him, as freshman Connor Cullen finished with eight points, seniors Brady Van Wyk and Cale Van Wyk each had seven, senior Nathan Russell had six and junior Darin Hofer finished with four. Brady Van Wyk and Hofer shared the team lead with six rebounds.

Both Lynnville-Sully teams will wrap up their four-game road trips with a visit to New Sharon to take on North Mahaska on Friday. The Warrior girls remained undefeated at 6-0, while the boys are 2-3.

CMB basketball swept by North Polk

Both Collins-Maxwell-Baxter basketball teams suffered road defeats at North Polk Tuesday night, with the boys falling 69-51 and the girls falling 63-32.

The Raider boys now sit at 2-4 overall with a 1-4 mark in the Heart of Iowa Conference, while the girls are 1-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference. Both teams were also coming off victories.

CMB will travel to PCM on Friday for the first half of the intra-county rivalry games.
