Hawks, Tigerhawks battle in Tuesday triangular

SULLY — When there are three wrestling teams in a gym, one normally could expect plenty of wrestling to be had.

That wasn’t the case with Lynnville-Sully, Colfax-Mingo and Southeast Warren on Tuesday, however.

On a night that featured 21 forfeits in a triangular that took right around two hours to complete, the host Hawks came away with two victories, while the Tigerhawks left empty-handed.

The first meet of the night pitted Lynnville-Sully against Southeast Warren, which the Hawks won by a narrow 42-33 margin. Senior Levi Bennington opened things up for the Hawks with an 8-5 decision at 152 pounds, and he was followed by a 6-4 decision at 160 by junior Caden Doll. Those two victories were the last non-pin or non-forfeit matchups for the rest of the night.

Lynnville-Sully, being the only team with a full lineup, received forfeits at 106, 126, 138, 170, 195 and 285. Meanwhile, the Warhawks earned pins at every remaining weight to make the final score as close as it was.

“They’ve got several good wrestlers and we wrestled them very tough,” L-S coach Steve Northcutt said of Southeast Warren. “Caden, Levi and Meliek (Meyer) each had tough opponents and I’m pleased with their efforts. We just need to get them more of those tougher matches coming up.”

Up next were the Tigerhawks and Warhawks, which started with a forfeit by each team as well as a double forfeit. Chris Warner scored C-M’s first contested victory, pinning Southeast Warren’s Chris Davis in two minutes, 36 seconds to tie the score at 12-12. C-M then took forfeits at 106 and 285 to end up with a 48-24 defeat.

“It’s kind of hard to get into a rhythm and flow when there’s so many forfeits, but I’m happy with the matches on the mat from the standpoint of effort,” C-M coach Bryan Poulter said. “We still have a lot of growing to do and some people that need to figure out that wrestling is a contact sport and they’ll have bumps and bruises they’ll need to play through.”

The meet’s finale featured the two Jasper County schools going head-to-head. The Tigerhawks got off to a hot start as seniors Dylan Albright, Jesse Nicodemus and Warner earned consecutive pins at 182, 196 and 220. Sophomore Jimmy Abell then earned the Tigerhawks’ final victory of the night with a pin at 106.

“Out of the matches he’s had, I thought tonight he had the best flow of going from one move to the next,” Poulter said of Abell. “His rhythm was good and his aggresiveness is always good, so I was happy to see that. We’d just like to see him get more matches.”

It was all Hawks after that as Shane Thompson (285), Colten Roorda (113), Malin Meyer (120), Jamison Goodyk (126) stuck their opponents. L-S then received forfeits at 132, 138, 145, 152 and 160 to close out the night.

The next few weeks will offer different challenges for the two teams. The Tigerhawks face a brutal stretch with five meets in the next two weeks. Meanwhile, the Hawks will wrestle at home for the last time this season with a tournament on Saturday. C-M will continue to work on getting healthier, while Northcutt has different plans for the Hawks.

“We’re still not happy with our shape, and we’ve been working our tails off,” Northcutt said. “We just need to keep working on that in meets and practice up until Christmas.”
