Newton police remind community of bus safety

The Newton Police Department reminds citizens that all vehicles must come to a complete stop when approaching a school bus when it is loading and unloading passengers.

When a school bus is stopped with flashing red or amber warning lamps and stop signal arm extended, it is mandatory that all vehicles traveling in both directions come to a complete stop. Vehicles must stop moving from both directions when a school bus is stopped on First Avenue where there are three lanes of traffic. Traffic is prohibited from moving forward in either lane, as well as the passing lane, when a school bus is stopped and has the flashing red lights and the traffic stop arm is out.

Newton school buses make several stops on First Avenue, so please be aware and obey the traffic laws. Please also wait until the school crossing guards have let the children cross the street and the crossing guard has returned to the curb before crossing the intersection.

The fine for passing a stopped school bus is $330 and a court appearance is required.
