NCT cast to perform ‘Miracle on 34th Street’ beginning Friday

It hardly seems likely there are too many people today who haven’t seen the classic 1947 film “Miracle on 34th Street.”

The Oscar-winning film tells the story of Kris Kringle, who takes the job of department store Santa at the Macy’s flagship store on 34th Street in New York City, but is later put on trial when he insists he is the real Santa Claus. Over the next 65 years, it has become a Christmas staple.

Friday night, the Newton Community Theatre will open its holiday production of a stage adaptation of “Miracle on 34th Street,” taking the audience back to New York City of 1947. Sue Beukema of NCT said the play will create “a world free of commercialism, where love and generosity of spirit are their own rewards.”

“By chance, Kris Kringle, played by Scott Schaeffer, gets a job working as Santa for Macy’s,” she said. “Kris decides to work his matchmaking skills on Fred, played by Lonnie Appleby, and Doris, played by Kristine Perkins. The lovely young Susan, played by Claire Hunt, will steal your heart on her journey to believing.”

The cast will include a number of new faces, as well as many familiar theatre regulars. Show times will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, at 2 p.m. Sunday, plus 7:30 p.m. showings Dec. 13 through 15.

“The lights, set, hair, make-up and costumes will transport you back to that magical era as Kris unleashes waves of good will in New York City,” Beukema said. “Be sure to join us to see if the court confirms Kris as the true Santa, allowing Susan and countless other children to experience the joy of childhood fantasy.”

Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for youth. Call (641) 792-1230 for more information, or to order tickets by phone.
