Helen Springer

Helen Illene Springer, 71, of Newton passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton under the care of Skiff Hospice.

A funeral service for Helen will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Newton. The family will greet friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pence–Reese Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be in Palo Alto Cemetery. Memorials are being designated in Helen’s name to St. Luke United Methodist Church and may be left at the church or funeral home.

Helen, the daughter of Theodore Louis Weyers and Emma Mae (Bell) Weyers, was born Dec. 16, 1940, in Newton. A lifelong resident of the Newton area, she graduated from the Newton Senior High, Class of 1959.

On Feb. 24, 1960, Helen was united in marriage with Charles E. Springer at the First Christian Church. She sold Avon for several years, prior to working at Walmart for 16 years, retiring in 2006. She had devoted her life to her family and friends, and was a member St. Luke United Methodist Church. Helen was a kind and warm-hearted lady, and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. She enjoyed gardening and feeding and watching her birds.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents.

Those left to honor Helen’s memory include her husband, Charles; her four children, Joyce (Tim) Callahan of Prairie City, David (Vicki Hewitt) Springer of Colfax, Duane (Bernice) Springer of Runnells and Dale (Claudia) Springer of Newton; her nine grandchildren, Kristen Braun, Jenna Callahan, Alysia Olson, Morgan Springer, Taylar Springer, Hunter Springer, Dakota Springer, Benjamin Springer and Nicholas Springer; three great-grandchildren, Ryan Braun, Andrew Braun and Liam Olson; her brothers and sisters, Thelma (Teddy) Shampine, Mary Hoover, Carroll Weyers, Carl Weyers, Kay Law, Jan Foster and Ima Jean White; and her many friends.
