Laura, the daughter of Bert and Mary (McDonald) McBride, was born on Jan. 7, 1925, in Sully. She graduated from Sully High School in 1943. Laura was united in marriage with Marion L. McCumber on Nov. 23, 1968, in Newton. She worked in the art department as a commercial artist at the Vernon Company for 40 years, retiring in the late 1970s. During her time there she designed the Green Bay Packers logo, calendars and semi-trailer and billboard advertising. Laura also did public speaking and had given a speech regarding nursing home abuse. To this day, nurses are required to take a test based on this speech. Laura loved to learn and had taken as many college and computer classes at DMACC as she could.

Laura was a member of the First Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 111 Auxiliary, VFW Post 1655 Auxiliary, Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary, Women’s Relief Corps, Women of the Moose, Union Veterans Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution, Rock Creek Ikettes, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and was a Stephen’s Minister. She loved playing bingo and had enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Those left to honor Laura’s memory are her two sisters-in-law, Irene and Hilda McCumber, both of Newton, and her many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by his parents and husband, Marion in 2011.
