George Sickle

George Sickle, 87, of Newton died on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2012, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery. A visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home. Memorials to Skiff Hospice may be left at the funeral home.

George, the son of John and Mary (Klobnak) Sickle, was born on March 9, 1925, in Melrose, Iowa. He graduated from Melrose High School and, immediately following graduation, went to serve his country in the U.S. Navy. George was discharged from the Navy in 1946. He was united in marriage with Bette R. Hummel on Jan. 6, 1951, in Des Moines, Iowa. They made their home in Newton, Iowa. George worked for more than 30 years as a linesman for Iowa Southern Utilities. George was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and the Electrical Union. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping.

Those left to honor George’s memory are his two step-sons, Wayne (Donna) Northcutt of Newton and Rick Northcutt of Des Moines; six step-grandchildren; his 20 step-great-grandchildren; 12 nieces and nephews; brother-in-law, Roy Hummel of Newton; sister-in-law, Pat Withers of Colfax; and nephew, Ron Hale of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bette in 2010; his two brothers, John and Ed Sickle; and five sisters, Ann Utter, Wilma Dowsey, Agnes Grove, Mary Main and an infant sister, Margaret Sickle.
