New coffeehouse to open on Newton’s courthouse square in January

Newton will be getting a new coffeehouse, Bridgehouse Coffee Co., opening in January. The owner of the new coffee house, Brock Patterson, has been interested in opening one up for a while.
Bridgehouse will serve coffee and various pastries. Sara Crawford is helping Patterson with the coffeehouse, and said that their scones are the best. They hope to have a bakery set up by the time the coffee house is open.
“We spend quite a bit of time in coffee houses, in different areas,” said Patterson.
Crawford has had some experience baking. She had a homemade baking business in the past, and has baked for some large events. One unique feature that the coffeehouse will have is a drive-up window.
“It’s a matter of service,” said Patterson. “It will be nice for the community to have.”
Crawford and Patterson realize the importance of the drive-up window. It sets the shop apart from other coffeehouses. With the winter months ahead, the drive-up will allow customers to stay warm and enjoy their coffee on the go.
Bridgehouse will also have a community room free of charge to the public. It can host 8-10 people. Patterson would like to get local church groups involved, as well as businesses.
“We hope people can come in, and use it for Bible studies or business meetings,” said Patterson.
The coffeehouse will be Christian-based. They are open to help local churches out with clothing, and food drives.
Patterson plans on donating a percentage back to the community.
“Our intent is to take a percentage of our proceeds and donate back to either missions, or special projects,” said Patterson.”This isn’t a business to reap off the benefits. Our intent is to make the community involved.”
Bridgehouse will also serve Italian sodas and hot chocolate. Patterson and Crawford hope to make Bridgehouse a family coffeehouse.
“We just don’t want it be for mom and dad”, said Patterson. “We want a family place.”
In the future, they are planning to have some local Christian bands perform.
The menu is not set, but Patterson hopes to use organic coffee beans, and may even use local dairy products. During the week, they plan on staying open until 8 p.m., and 11 p.m. on the weekends.
“Newton could benefit from something with a little bit of later hours in the evening,” said Patterson. “Friday, Saturday, we would like to be open until 11 o’clock.”
Since Bridgehouse is an independent coffeehouse it will have the freedom of choosing its own coffee blends. Patterson tasted coffee from all around the country, but before anything else happens, he still needs to build the store.
“When you look into the building right now, all you see is a big rectangle,” said Patterson. “We’ve got new flooring going in.”
Patterson said there is a lot going on, but he is confident that everything will get done. Bridgehouse does not have a set date, but it is expected to open in January.
Bridgehouse Co. will be located at 111 W. Second St. N. in Newton.
