Mustangs boys basketball wins opener 53-50

PCM boys win opener 53-50 over Gilbert

The Prairie City-Monroe boys basketball team opened its season with a challenge at Gilbert, where the Mustangs held off a second-half rally to earn a 53-50 road win over the Tigers.

Senior Michael Neff paced the offensive attack for the Mustangs (1-0, 1-0 Heart of Iowa Conference) with 16 points, while junior Dillon Bruxvoort added 12 and senior Ethan Kain had 11. Other scorers for the Mustangs included junior Zach Uhlenhopp (6), seniors Alex DeWitte and Hunter Van Veen (3 each) and freshman Logan Gilman (2).

Led by eight from Uhlenhopp, the Mustangs won the rebound battle 29-24, but made only three 3-pointers to Gilbert’s nine. PCM took a 23-16 lead into halftime, then fended off a charging Gilbert team that outscored the Mustangs 34-30 in the high-scoring second half.

PCM will continue its season with nonconference action against Knoxville in Monroe on Thursday.

PCM girls fall to Gilbert 53-31

The Prairie City-Monroe girls basketball team dropped to 0-2 overall and in the Heart of Iowa Conference with a 53-31 loss as Gilbert Tuesday night.

Junior Taylor Broshar had a big night for the Tigers (2-1, 2-0) with 16 points off the bench. Overall, 10 Gilbert players scored at least two points in the game.

The Mustangs will host Knoxville on Thursday before hitting the road to take on Greene County on Friday.

Tigerhawk boys downed in opener

The Colfax-Mingo boys basketball team opened its season Tuesday night with a home game against a tough opponent in North Polk, which handed the Tigerhawks a 61-36 loss.

Colfax-Mingo trailed only by five points at halftime before the Comets extended that lead to 15 by the end of the third quarter and didn’t look back. Russell Greene and Jacob Haddaway each had 15 points for North Polk, with Hunter Brumsvold and Eric Bonawitz also scoring in double figures with 13 and 10 points.

It was a one-man-show for the Tigerhawks, as senior Vaughn Wilson had 25 of their 36 points, including 16 in the first half.

C-M girls routed by Comets

The Colfax-Mingo girls basketball team didn’t fare any better than the boys against North Polk, falling 66-25 Tuesday night in Colfax. The Comets led 18-2 after one quarter.

Senior Nicolette Husson led Colfax-Mingo with eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks.

Saydel defeats CMB girls 55-52

In its closest contest of the season so far, the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls basketball team couldn’t quite pull out a victory Tuesday night.

The Raiders fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the Heart of Iowa Conference with a 55-52 loss to Saydel in Des Moines.

CMB will host Gilbert in Maxwell on Friday.
