Lahart, Newton receive soccer honors at Simpson College

Earlier this month, a pair of 2009 Newton Senior High School graduates — Mark Lahart and Brian Newton — earned honors to cap off their senior soccer season at Simpson College.

Lahart — a senior midfielder for the Storm — earned second-team All-Iowa Conference honors and also was named Simpson’s Male Athlete of the Month for October.

Lahart’s second-team honor is the first of his career after experiencing his best season for the Storm in 2012. He scored a career-high seven goals on the year and tied for the team lead with nine assists. He scored one game-winner and closed his career with 17 assists, tied for fifth in school history.

Teammate and fellow senior defender Newton earned a spot on the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District First Team, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Newton owns a cumulative GPA of 3.84 while triple-majoring in math, economics and finance. He started three of the 18 games in which he appeared this season and has one career goal. He is a two-time academic all-conference pick, a four-time Dean’s List honoree, a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa National Honor Society, the Eminent Treasurer for the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and a member of the Simpson Math Club.
