NHS offering lifetime activities pass for local senior citizens
Little known to the Newton community until perhaps now is one of Newton Senior High School’s most generous offers — the Red Pride Lifetime Senior Citizen Pass.
For those aren’t aware, NHS offers the pass year-round to any Newton School District resident over 62 years old for free, and it grants them access to any NHS activity, from home sporting events to music performances and everything in between.
It’s an offer that’s flown under the radar for a while, something that NHS Athletic Director Scott Garvis is trying to change.
“I was speaking with a couple of our community members about how a lot of people don’t know about it,” said Garvis, who became AD in August. We talked about some strategies to get the word out. I spoke at Rotary today (Nov. 20) and we had five or six people come up and get a pass.
“It’s a way to promote people coming to events to come and watch our kids perform — whether athletically or coming to the plays and musicals.”
The pass is good year-round and can be picked up at the NHS main office during school hours.
NHS is sent flyers home promoting the pass with all athletes for Thanksgiving Break to help spread the word as the winter sports season gets underway.
“Hopefully they’ll see grandma and grandpa and be able to give them that,” Garvis said.
Garvis said the NHS boys and girls basketball teams soon will hand out season schedules with information about the pass on them.
“I think it’s been here a long time. I think people just weren’t real aware of it,” Garvis said. “It’s a way to promote what we have out on the court, the pool or the stage.”
