Mustang girls drop opener to Nevada, 50-36

It was a see-saw battle, but the Prairie City-Monroe girls basketball team fell behind in the third quarter and couldn’t recover in its season opener Tuesday night.

Sophomore Grace Telfer led the way for the Mustangs (0-1, 0-1 Heart of Iowa Conference) with 13 points, but a well-rounded effort from Nevada led to a 50-36 Mustang defeat.

After putting up just seven points in the first quarter, PCM recovered for 15 in the second to trail just 24-22 at halftime. However, Nevada outscored the Mustangs 16-4 in the third and the teams came to a 10-10 stalemate in the fourth to end the game.

Senior Kelsey Townsend was next in scoring with six points, while sophomore Courtney Van Houweling had five and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior Krisha Houseman and junior Lexi Kain each contributed four points and senior Kaitlyn Wilkie and junior Abbi Gilson each had two.

The Mustangs will hit the road to take on Gilbert on Nov. 27.
