Cardinal girls drop opener to Perry 65-32

The Newton basketball team is trying to challenge itself in the first few games of the season, and it had plenty of a challenge Monday night.

Squaring off against Class 4A No. 13 Perry, the Cardinals suffered a 65-32 loss to open up their season.

Perry managed a robust 27 points in the first quarter, then took a 44-17 lead into halftime. The Cardinals leveled things out a bit in the second half, scoring 15 to Perry’s 21, but the Bluejays cruised from there to earn the W.

Senior Kaylie Rhoads led the Cards with 11 points, while fellow senior Katelyn Camp had eight points and tied for the team lead with senior Anna Latcham with four rebounds. Junior Lizzie Stock and sophomore Michaela Jacobsen each contributed five points off the bench and senior Michelle Marquis had three points to round out the Cardinals’ scoring.

The Cards will stay on the road to face No. 2 Winterset next Tuesday before hosting Saydel in their home opener Nov. 29.
