Waterloo officer shoots, kills 22-year-old man

WATERLOO (AP) — A Waterloo police officer’s decision to shoot and kill a fleeing 22-year-old man is being investigated, police said Sunday.

The Iowa Criminal Division of Investigation said the incident happened near a Waterloo bar around 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning.

Officials said officer Kyle Law was able to quickly respond to a reported shooting at New World Lounge II because he was working in the area.

Law told investigators that when he arrived, he saw Derrick Ambrose pointing a gun at the bar crowd. Law ordered Ambrose to drop his gun, but Ambrose fled and Law chased after him.

During the foot pursuit, investigators said Ambrose stepped out from behind a tree, and Law fatally shot him in the head. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Authorities said a gun was recovered, but they declined to discuss details. No injuries were reported in the initial shooting at the bar before the chase began. DCI investigators continued working to gather evidence Sunday morning.
