Husson leads Tigerhawks one last time

It's been a rough go for the Colfax-Mingo girls basketball team the past two seasons. Two years ago, it went 1-20. Last year, it went 3-18.

And while this season already may be off to a rocky start, there are things to look forward to Tigerhawk fans.

The biggest one has to be senior Nicolette Husson. The 6-foot center returns as one of the top players in the Heart of Iowa Conference after earning second-team all-league honors the last two seasons.

Unbeknownst to many, Husson led the entire state of Iowa — all classes — in rebounds per game last season at 14.5. She totaled 305 of them, which was the eighth most in all classes with playoff games included. She finished sixth in the conference in scoring at 14.3 points per game (300 total).

She has 625 career points and 695 career rebounds. If Colfax-Mingo plays 21 games this season like it has the last two, Husson will need to average 17.9 points per game this season to reach 1,000 career points, and will need to average just over 14.5 rebounds per game to reach 1,000 for her career.

Husson also led the conference in blocks per game last year at 2.1.

After Husson, the Tigerhawks have had to replace three of last year's starters. This year's roster features only nine players, but most have seen varsity minutes. Senior Sydnie Fahrney is the other returning starter. She scored 36 points last year, had 20 assists, 13 steals and 34 rebounds. Junior Anna Baldwin also saw plenty of varsity time last year. She scored 47 points, had 26 assists and 103 rebounds.

Fellow senior Raynee Quick, sophomore Sara Lahart and Jessica Albright look to rotate into the starting lineup throughout the season, with juniors Jena Teed and Jade Lewis also available.

The Tigerhawks opened their season Tuesday at home against Gilbert. They host North Polk next Tuesday.
