Hazel Nason

Hazel Alice (Mrs. Vernon) Nason, 85, of Marshalltown passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012, at the Iowa River Hospice House in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 18, 2012, at the Main St. Chapel of the Anderson Funeral Homes. Interment will be at the Iowa Brethren Church Cemetery in rural Marshalltown.

Hazel was born Nov. 2, 1927. She was the second daughter of Thomas and Martha Hodges McWilliams. She attended her first three school years in Clemons. In 1936, her parents moved to their farm near Conrad, and she graduated from Conrad High School in 1945. She married Vernon Nason on July 24, 1949. She worked in the offices of Montgomery Ward Retail Stores for 15 years. In 1979, she and her husband purchased Dick’s Auto Supply and they worked together until Vernon’s serious illness in 1996.

She was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the chancel choir, taught Sunday school, directed primary choir and served two terms as deacon. She was a lifetime member of the Iowa Historical Society. Hazel will be remembered as a good friend, a wonderful mother and a goofy grandmother. She was an inspiration to us all with her smiles, laughter and love.

Hazel is survived by her loving children Cindy (Mark) Lindstrom of Newton and Cary (Chris) Nason of Marshalltown; her loving grandchildren, Chad Greenwood of Gilbert, Ariz., Lindsey Greenwood of Des Moines and Catherine and Cassie Nason of  Marshalltown; two sisters, Velma Sheller of Marshalltown, Marilyn (Richard) Culley of West Minster, Calif.; one brother Robert McWilliams of Conrad; brother-in-law Carrol (Virginia) Nason of Marshalltown; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband Vernon; her brother Wilbur McWilliams; her sister-in-law Bertha McWilliams; brother-in-law Steven Nason; sisters-in law Doris Helmer and Jane Yettke; and nephew James Katzer.
