Three area teams scrimmage in Sully

Three Jasper County teams took part in their first competition Monday night as Lynnville-Sully hosted a girls basketball scrimmage jamboree that included eight teams with a mixture of Class 1A and 2A schools. Four games were played, eaching lasting one half. Area teams involved included Prairie City-Monroe playing Montezuma and Colfax-Mingo playing host Lynnville-Sully.

None of the four games played were competitive, including the two involving Jasper County schools. PCM trounced Montezuma 40-9. The Mustangs led 23-0 after the first quarter. Their five starers included sophomore Courtney Van Houweling, junior Abbi Gilson and seniors Krisha Houseman, Kaitlyn Wilkie and Kelsey Townsend.

Sophomore Grace Telfer led the way with 12 points, while Townsend had eight. Houseman and senior Payge Edwards had five each, Van Houweling had four, while Gilson and Wilkie added three each.

The game between the Tigerhawks and Hawks was competitive for a quarter before Lynnville-Sully pulled away. Colfax-Mingo led 4-0 before Lynnville-Sully took a 15-9 lead into the second quarter and ended up winning 31-15. The Hawks’ starters were juniors Becca Vos, Jade Van Rees, Cassie Cullen, Lyndsay Terpstra and Rachel Van Wyk. For Colfax-Mingo, it was seniors Sydnie Fahrney, Raynee Quick and Nicolette Husson, sophomore Sara Lahart and freshman Jessica Albright.

Sophomore Shelby Davis led Lynnville-Sully with 10 points, sophomore Madison Rasmusson had eight, Terpstra had six, Van Wyk had four and Vos added one. Only two players scored for Colfax-Mingo, as Husson had 12 points and junior Jade Lewis had three.

Lynnville-Sully begins its regular season Friday at English Valleys. Colfax-Mingo hosts Gilbert Nov. 20, the same night PCM hosts Nevada.
