American Legion officers to visit Newton tonight

To the editor:

As Veterans Day has arrived, I would like to take this special opportunity to say, “thank you,” to your Newton American Legion Post and Auxiliary Unit for the work they do all year long in service to the military veterans in your community.

From the daily efforts you put forth to stand ready to honor your fallen comrades to organizing and executing Freedom Flights and Honor Flights, your work has not gone unnoticed and is certainly appreciated by your community.

Today, along with myself, National Vice Commander Glenn A. Hickman of Ohio will begin a tour of communities in western and central Iowa. Our first evening meeting is scheduled at your American Legion Post 111 at 7:15 p.m. All military veterans and concerned citizens of Newton are invited to hear Commander Hickman’s message concerning the direction of The American Legion, legislative issues facing our veterans, and how your community can be involved in assisting those who are serving or have returned from deployments.

State and local officers will also be on hand that evening to answer any particular questions you may have concerning benefit and claim issues. The City of Newton deserves no less than the newest and most up-to-date information for your military veterans. We hope you take advantage of this special visitor to your city.

I look forward to meeting all of you tonight at the Newton American Legion Post 111.

Lyle D. Schaffer

Department Commander
