IGCA releases All-District softball teams

The Iowa Girls Coaches Association released its 2012 All-District softball teams on Tuesday, and they included six Jasper County players and one coach.

Representing Newton on the Class 4A Southeast Team was senior pitcher Courtney Meyer, who earned all-district honors for a second-straight year. Meyer started 26 of Newton’s 33 games this season, posting a 16-10 record while throwing 1731⁄3 innings.

Entering the Cardinals’ final game of the season, she had ERA of 1.56 and her opponents’ batting average was .184, totaling 156 strikeouts. At the plate, she led the team in hits (44), doubles (12), RBI (23), walks (19) and had 10 home runs. Her season-long batting average was .512 and her on-base percentage was a staggering .600. Last week she also earned First-Team All-Little Hawkeye Conference for a second -season.

Prairie City-Monroe was represented on the Class 3A Central All-District team by junior outfielder Kelsey Townsend. She was the Mustangs’ top hitter, carrying an average of .416. She had a team-high 52 hits, including 10 doubles, two triples and one home run. She struck out only 11 times in 125 at-bats, had 25 RBI and a team-best 16 stolen bases. She had a .931 fielding percentage in the outfield, coming up with 44 putouts and 10 assists on 58 chances.

On the Class 2A Central Team, Colfax-Mingo was represented by junior utility player Sydnie Fahrney. As pitcher, she started 28 games for the Tigerhawks and threw 164 innings. At the plate as of June 26, her on-base percentage (.529) and slugging percentage (.578) led the team, while her batting average of .410 was second. She totaled 34 hits, including five doubles and three home runs. She had 16 RBI, was walked 20 times and scored a team-high 26 runs.

Following a 25-6 season that fell one game short of a third-straight state tournament appearance, the Lynnville-Sully softball team was well-represented on the Class 1A South Central All-District Team. Freshman pitcher Madison Rasmusson and senior outfielders Taylor Fisk and Abby Van Wyk each made the team.

Rasmusson was the only freshman named to the team. She had a 23-5 record as the Hawks’ starting pitcher, throwing 1562⁄3 innings and posting a miniscule 1.16 ERA. She had 112 strikeouts and held opponents to a .192 batting average. She also was one of the area’s top hitters. She had a .535 batting average and .673 slugging percentage. She had a team-high 54 hits, including four doubles and five triples and she had 10 RBI. She scored a team-high 37 runs and struck out only eight times in 101 at-bats.

At center field, Van Wyk had an .867 fielding percentage, coming up with 24 putouts and four assists on 30 chances. At the plate, she had a .363 batting average and a .571 OBP. She had 33 hits, including 10 doubles, three triples and one home run. She had 15 RBI and went a perfect 24-for-24 stealing bases. She was second on the team with 33 runs scored.

Fisk had a .857 fielding percentage, recording 15 putouts and three assists on 21 chances. At the plate, she hit .391 for the season and had a .575 slugging percentage. She had 34 hits, including 12 doubles and two triples and had 20 RBI. She scored 20 runs.

To top off the Hawks’ awards, coach Stacey Alberts was named the 1A South Central All-District coach.
